Go to any clinic in India. You will see three separate systems.
A register at the front desk. A diary or a WhatsApp group for lab tests. And a phone call to the medical store to ask if a medicine is there.
None of them talk to each other. So the same patient name is written three times. And every time something is passed from one hand to another, something can go wrong.
This guide tells you what changes when all three work on one screen.
Where the time actually goes
Doctors think typing is what slows the OPD down. OPD means your normal walk-in clinic. Typing is part of it. But most of the delay is waiting and asking.
- The patient goes to the medical store. The brand is not there. He comes back.
- You write the prescription again with another brand.
- The patient goes for a blood test. Nobody knows when the report will come.
- Two days later, somebody calls the lab to ask.
- The report comes on WhatsApp as a photo. Now somebody has to find the file and put it in.
Each one is small. Put together, this is most of your day.
What "connected" means, in plain words
It means the patient is entered one time. After that, everybody sees the same thing.
Front desk. The patient is registered by name or mobile number. This is the only time anybody types his details.
Waiting area. Token numbers come on a TV and are called out by voice. Patients stop standing at your door, because they can see how many are ahead.
Your room. The patient's old vitals, medicines and history are already on the screen. You talk. The note and the prescription get written for you.
Lab. The lab gets your test order the moment you tick the boxes. No slip, no phone call. When the report is ready, it comes back into that patient's file by itself. The values also go into a chart, so you can see the change from last time.
Pharmacy. You can see what is on the shelf while you are still writing. If a medicine is not there, you know before the patient walks over.
Patient. He gets the prescription on WhatsApp before he leaves, and a reminder for the next visit.
One question to ask any company
Ask this: "If I write a medicine my pharmacy does not have, when will I come to know?"
There are only two answers. Either you come to know while writing it. Or the patient comes to know at the counter and walks back to you.
Most clinic software gives the second answer. It keeps records and appointments, but it has no link to your shelf.
Ask the same about tests: "When the lab finishes the report, what do I have to do to get it into the file?" If somebody has to download it and upload it again, it is not connected.
What it does not mean
Two things to be careful about.
One. Connected does not mean automatic. Your lab and your chemist have to use the same software also. In Clyno they sign up themselves and it is free for them. But it is a real step. Somebody has to do it. If a company says your existing lab is already "integrated" without the lab doing anything, ask them how.
Two. Connected does not mean your patient data goes to outsiders. Ask where the data is kept, who can see it, and what happens if you stop using it. A clear answer is a good sign.
How to start
You do not need everything on day one.
- 1Start with the front desk and the consultation. This works on its own.
- 2Add the waiting-room TV next. Patients notice this the fastest.
- 3Add the pharmacy when you are ready. Easiest if the medical store is yours or in the same building.
- 4Add the lab last. Or first, if most of your work is report-based.

- The real test: do you find out about a stock problem while writing, or after the patient walks back?
- Reports should go into the file on their own, not come as photos.
